land ash scattering
Honouring a loved one’s memory is a deeply personal experience. Today, more people are seeking ways to celebrate their loved ones that feel authentic, meaningful, and connected to nature. Land ash scattering has become an increasingly popular choice, especially as people gravitate toward eco-friendly and serene resting places. In Singapore, this practice takes on a special significance at the Garden of Peace, where families can create heartfelt and lasting tributes amidst natural beauty.

What is Land Ash Scattering?

Land ash scattering or inland ash scattering is a method of returning cremated remains to the earth. It’s a symbolic and physical way of letting go, often accompanied by moments of reflection, prayer, or personal rituals. This practice allows families to choose a natural setting that resonates with the loved one's memory and provides a peaceful space for remembrance.

In Singapore, the Garden of Peace at Choa Chu Kang Cemetery Complex offers an opportunity for families to scatter ashes in a designated area that emphasises respect, dignity, and harmony with nature. It’s a serene environment where every act feels deeply significant.

Why Choose Land Ash Scattering?

The appeal of land ash scattering goes beyond the simple act itself. For many, it’s a way to reconnect with nature and find comfort in knowing that their loved one’s memory is entwined with the living world. Here are some reasons why people choose this option:

  • Environmentally Conscious: Unlike traditional burials, scattering ashes has a minimal environmental footprint. No chemicals, concrete, or metals are involved—just the gentle return of ashes to the soil.
  • Simplicity and Serenity: Land ash scattering provides a simple yet profound experience. The setting is quiet and peaceful, making it ideal for intimate gatherings.
Sustainable Memorial: It aligns with the growing trend of green burials, where final resting places support sustainability and ecological balance.

The Garden of Peace: A Sanctuary for Inland Ash Scattering

Located within the Choa Chu Kang Cemetery Complex, the Garden of Peace serves as Singapore’s official site for inland ash scattering. It’s designed with the concept of tranquillity in mind, allowing families of all beliefs to say their farewells in a calm, natural environment. Open daily from 9 am to 5 pm (except on maintenance days), the Garden of Peace welcomes visitors through two entrances:

  • North Gate: Located along Old Choa Chu Kang Road, next to the bus stop no. 31139.
  • South Gate: At the junction of Cemetery South Street 18 and Muslim Cemetery Path 11.

This location offers an open-garden concept, where individuals can scatter ashes among the pebbles and soil. The emphasis is on maintaining a space where all visitors, regardless of background, can find solace and dignity.

Understanding the Land Ash Scattering Process

Important Considerations at the Garden of Peace

To maintain the peaceful and dignified atmosphere of the Garden, visitors are asked to observe the following guidelines:

  • Non-noisy services allowed such as soft chanting.
  • No Objects or Decorations: The open-garden concept ensures a clean and serene environment; hence, placing objects within the garden is not allowed.
  • Maintain Silence: The Garden of Peace is a place for reflection and tranquillity. Visitors are encouraged to maintain a respectful silence to honour those who have come before.

Do note that only the ashes of Singaporeans, Singapore Permanent Residents (PRs) who have passed away in Singapore or those with a Next-of-Kin (NOK) who is a PR can be scattered at the Garden of Peace.
