Showers of Love: Honouring the Departed Through a Heartfelt Ritual

showers of love
Saying goodbye is never easy. In fact, it’s one of the most profound experiences we will ever face. When a loved one passes, we want to honour them, remember them, and shower them with the love they deserve—one last time. That’s where the Showers of Love ceremony steps in, offering a beautiful and deeply personal farewell.

But this isn’t just any farewell. It’s an opportunity for families to actively take part in a final act of care. The ceremony is centred around love, remembrance, and healing. It’s a chance for families to reflect on the memories, express their gratitude, and ultimately, find a form of closure.

The Five Love Languages – A Personal Farewell

Showers of Love utilises the 5 love languages during the ceremony which draws inspiration from the renowned book, The Five Love Languages by Dr Gary Chapman. This ceremony allows grieving families to express their feelings using these five languages:

  • Words of Affirmation: Through words written on an origami paper, families can share their gratitude or love for the departed.
  • Physical Touch: The gentle act of cleaning, massaging, and caring for the body allows loved ones to express tenderness in a tangible way.
  • Acts of Service: Helping to clean, dress, and care for the departed gives families a sense of purpose and connection.
  • Quality Time: Spending these final moments with the deceased provides a window of deep reflection and memory.
  • Gifts: Folding the paper into an orizuru, a traditional Japanese crane, serves as a symbolic gesture for eternal rest.

Through this, the bereaved can express their love in a way that feels most meaningful to them, creating a path for healing.

Soft Embalming – A Gentle Approach

It’s difficult enough to see a loved one go. Traditional embalming techniques often make it worse. The high concentration of formaldehyde not only changes the appearance of the deceased but also creates an overpowering odour. This can be distressing for families during their final moments.

At The Life Celebrant (TLC), we use a more delicate approach known as Soft Embalming. This technique is designed to preserve the natural appearance and feel of the body, allowing the family to feel more at ease. Without the harsh chemicals and strong smells, the process is gentler, ensuring the deceased is presented in a way that honours their dignity.

This technique has proven to be an essential part of the Showers of Love ceremony. Families find comfort in touching and seeing their loved one looking at peace, allowing them to focus on the ritual rather than the discomfort of harsh smells and altered appearances.

The Orizuru – Symbolism in the Farewell

In Japanese culture, the orizuru, a paper crane, symbolises eternal rest. It is believed that these cranes guide souls to the light, carrying them to paradise. This is why folding an origami crane during the Showers of Love is such a powerful and meaningful gesture.

Before the ceremony begins, family members are invited to write loving messages, memories, or words of farewell on coloured origami paper. Once these thoughts are written down, they are carefully folded into an orizuru, a final symbolic gift to the departed. This small act carries great emotional weight. It’s a parting gift—something tangible that represents the family’s love and hopes for their loved one’s peaceful journey.

A Step-by-Step Ceremony of Healing

The Showers of Love ritual begins with a warm reception. Families are received with light refreshments in a calming lounge, setting the tone for the rest of the ceremony. This space is intentionally designed to feel intimate, allowing families to feel comfortable as they prepare for the final farewell.

Once ready, the family is gently ushered into the Showers of Love Sanctuary. An all-ladies team, known as the Showers of Love (SOL) Angels, leads the process ceremony with the utmost respect and care. Here’s how the ceremony unfolds:
  • Body Cleansing: The SOL Angels guide the family in cleansing the body. This act begins from the head and continues to the feet, representing a full-circle journey of care. Family members may assist in this process if they wish, making it a deeply personal moment of connection.
  • Facial Masks and Nail Care: The body is then given extra care through facial masks and nail treatments, ensuring the departed looks serene and well-kept.
  • Dressing and Make-Up: Lastly, the family may assist in dressing and applying make-up to their loved one, honouring them with dignity as they are prepared for their final viewing.

Each step of the Showers of Love ceremony is done with reverence, allowing families to engage in a meaningful and personal farewell.

A Farewell Filled with Grace and Dignity

What sets Showers of Love apart is the way it intertwines physical care with emotional expression. It’s not just about preparing the body for its final journey—it’s about creating a space for families to heal, love, and let go. The ritual allows families to say goodbye in a way that feels personal, meaningful, and filled with grace.

By engaging in this intimate process, loved ones can create a lasting memory of their final moments together. It’s a ceremony that transforms grief into an act of love, giving families the peace they need to move forward.
