What Is the Funeral System in Buddhism? Understanding Buddhist Funerals in Singapore

When someone passes away in a Buddhist family, the funeral is not just a farewell—it is a spiritual journey. Unlike Western-style funerals, which focus on closure, Buddhist funerals emphasise guiding the deceased towards a better rebirth.

But what exactly does a Buddhist funeral system involve? How are these funerals conducted in Singapore? Whether you’re attending a Buddhist funeral or planning one for a loved one, understanding the rituals, structure, and traditions can provide clarity during a difficult time.

Let’s break down the Buddhist funeral system and how it is observed in Singapore.

How Does the Buddhist Funeral System Work?

Buddhist funerals follow a structured yet peaceful and reflective process. The focus is on prayers, merit-making, and ensuring a smooth transition into the next life. The system includes key rituals, a wake period, and post-funeral practices to honour the deceased.

The typical Buddhist funeral process in Singapore includes:

✅ Preparation of the body – Cleansing and dressing the deceased.
✅ Wake period – A multi-day wake with chanting and prayers.
✅ Funeral ceremony – A final service before cremation or burial.
✅ Cremation or burial – The last physical farewell.
✅ Post-funeral rites – A 49-day mourning period with ongoing prayers.

What Happens After Death in Buddhist Tradition?

In Buddhism, death is seen as a transition rather than an end. The deceased’s soul undergoes rebirth based on karma (past actions). Immediately after passing, family members follow important customs to guide the soul:

  • No touching of the body immediately after death for 8 to 12 hours – The belief is that the soul lingers for a while before leaving.
  • A peaceful atmosphere – Family members recite Buddhist scriptures to help the soul remain calm.
  • Monk-led prayers – Monks are invited to chant sutras, helping the deceased detach from worldly attachments.

These practices reflect Buddhist teachings on impermanence and the cycle of life (samsara).

The Funeral Ceremony and Cremation/Burial

On the final day of the wake, the funeral ceremony takes place:

📌 Procession – The casket is transported to the crematorium or burial site.
📌 Final chanting – Monks lead last prayers before the farewell.
📌 Cremation/Burial – Most Buddhist funerals in Singapore end with cremation.

Families may scatter the ashes at sea or place them in a columbarium, based on personal or religious preference.

What Happens After the Funeral? The 49-Day Mourning Period

Buddhist funeral customs continue beyond the physical farewell. The first 49 days after death are crucial because the soul is believed to be transitioning to its next life.

  • Weekly prayers are held at home or in temples.
  • Family members offer food and incense to generate good karma for the deceased.
  • The 100th-day memorial service is another important milestone.

Some families observe annual death anniversaries to continue honouring their loved ones.
