The loss of a loved one can be profoundly emotional, and when it happens at home, the steps to follow may feel daunting. Knowing what to do next can provide some much-needed clarity during this overwhelming time. Here’s a detailed, step-by-step guide on what to do when a loved one passes away at home in Singapore, covering everything from immediate actions to final arrangements and ongoing support.

1. Call a doctor to certify the passing

If your loved one passes away at home, the first step is to contact a doctor to certify the death. The doctor will issue a Certificate of Cause of Death (CCOD), which is essential for all further arrangements.

Tip: If you don’t know which doctor to call, you can also contact the funeral company to assist.

2. Download the death certificate

Once the Certificate of Cause of Death (CCOD) has been issued, the death certificate can be downloaded online via My Legacy. This document is necessary for funeral arrangements and legal procedures.

3. Engage a Funeral Director

Your next step is to engage a funeral director. Contact The Life Celebrant (TLC) at +65 6684 8488. They will provide compassionate, professional guidance, helping you understand the immediate procedures and next steps. Their dedicated Funeral Director will be there to assist you through each part of the process, ensuring that everything is handled respectfully and efficiently.

  • What to Expect: TLC’s Funeral Director will support you through legal formalities, logistical arrangements, and other initial actions that need immediate attention, giving you space to focus on your family.

4. Arrange the funeral

Once immediate steps are completed, the funeral director will work with you to plan a farewell that honours your loved one’s memory. TLC offers:

  • Transfer to a Decedent Care Centre: Your loved one will be moved to a care facility for preparation.
  • Final Outfit and Portrait: Choose a meaningful outfit and a portrait that reflects their essence.

Helpful Tip: Involve family members when selecting the final outfit and portrait. This process can be comforting as you share memories together.

5. The Showers of Love (SOL) Ceremony

The “Showers of Love” (SOL) ceremony is an intimate act of love and respect. Hosted at TLC’s SOL Sanctuary, family members can gather to participate in the dressing and bathing of your loved one as a final act of service. This hands-on farewell is both personal and deeply meaningful, allowing family members to connect through shared memories and acts of care.

Many families find this experience healing, as it offers a moment of closeness and closure before the formal farewell begins. The SOL Ceremony can be a way to honour and express your love for the departed in a private setting.

6. Set up the wake venue

TLC will assist in creating a wake that reflects your loved one’s life, beliefs, and values. This is a time for family and friends to gather, share stories, and offer each other support. TLC will help with:

  • Venue Setup: Organising seating, floral tributes, and other comforting arrangements.
  • Prayers or Rites: Guidance on religious or cultural ceremonies as per family traditions.

7. Funeral Day: The Final Farewell

On the funeral day, The Life Celebrant will take care of every detail, ensuring a seamless and respectful farewell. They will manage the proceedings to give you space to grieve and reflect. The key elements of the funeral day include:

  • Rites and Ceremonies: TLC will coordinate religious or cultural ceremonies that are meaningful to your family, making sure they are conducted with respect.
  • Eulogies: Family members and friends can give eulogies, sharing stories and memories of your loved one.
  • Final Send-Off: At the end of the ceremony, your loved one will be taken to their final resting place, whether that’s a crematorium or cemetery, based on the preferences discussed with TLC.

Note: Each family’s farewell is unique, and TLC is there to ensure the day reflects your wishes, creating a peaceful and dignified experience.

8. Choosing a final resting place

After cremation, TLC will assist with arranging a final resting place for your loved one’s ashes. There are several options available to suit personal preferences and family traditions:

  • Columbarium: For families who prefer a traditional resting place, ashes can be intered at a columbarium, providing a designated spot to visit and reflect.
  • Sea Scattering: Some families choose to scatter ashes at sea, which can be a powerful way to symbolise peace and release.
  • Inland Ash Scattering: Another option is to scatter ashes in a specified inland location, where it has been designated by the government.
  • Non-Conventional Resting Place: For families seeking unique ways to honour their loved ones, non-conventional options include transforming ashes into legacy plants, or even ash jewellery.

Each option offers a meaningful way to say a final goodbye, providing family members with a place to remember and honour their loved one.

Post-Funeral Care and Support

After the funeral, there may still be matters to attend to, and grief can feel especially intense. TLC offers several post-funeral services to support families during this time, including:

  • Estate Management with The Life Legacy: The legal process of estate management may involve obtaining a Grant of Probate or Letter of Administration. TLC can connect you with professionals to assist in these matters, ensuring that your loved one’s estate is managed according to their wishes.
  • Grief Counselling Assistance: Coping with loss is a journey, and speaking with a counsellor can help family members process their emotions. TLC provides access to grief counselling services, offering support for families as they navigate life after loss.
  • Additional Support: TLC’s commitment doesn’t end with the funeral. They provide ongoing assistance to help families manage both the legalities and emotional aspects of their journey.
