Grant of Probate & Letter of Administration

Grant of Probate & Letter of Administration - The Life Legacy by The Life Celebrant Singapore

When someone passes away, their loved ones need legal authority to access and distribute the estate — whether or not a will was left behind. A Grant of Probate is issued when the deceased had a valid will; a Letter of Administration is required when there was no will.

Both are court orders that give the appointed Executor or Administrator the legal authority to manage bank accounts, insurance policies, property, and other assets. The Life Legacy guides families through this process from start to finish.

Frequently Asked Questions About Estate Management in Singapore

  • A Grant of Probate is a court order issued when the deceased left a valid will, confirming the will's validity and authorising the named Executor to administer the estate.

A Letter of Administration is issued when there is no will — it appoints an Administrator, typically the next of kin, to manage and distribute the estate according to the Intestate Succession Act. Both serve the same essential purpose: giving the appointed person the legal authority to access and distribute the deceased's assets.

  • Without either of these court orders, the appointed Executor or Administrator has no legal authority to access the deceased's bank accounts, insurance policies, CPF nominations, or property — regardless of what the will states or how close the family relationship is. Financial institutions and government agencies require this court order before releasing any assets. Obtaining it is a necessary legal step that protects both the estate and the beneficiaries.

  • The timeline varies depending on the complexity of the estate and whether a will exists. A straightforward Grant of Probate typically takes between two to four months from the point of application. A Letter of Administration may take longer if the estate is complex or if there are disputes among family members. The Life Legacy will give you a realistic timeline at your initial consultation and keep you informed throughout the process.

  • The Life Legacy guides and supports your family through the entire process — explaining what is required, coordinating with the relevant legal professionals, and ensuring the application is completed correctly and submitted to the Family Justice Courts. Our role is to make this process as straightforward and stress-free as possible, so your family can focus on moving forward. Contact us at +65 6684 8488 or on WhatsApp to get started.
