Biodegradable urns for sea burial - The Life Celebrant Singapore

At The Life Celebrant, we offer sea burial as a meaningful, peaceful, and eco-conscious farewell — one that returns your loved one gently to the open waters that surround Singapore. Using biodegradable urns exclusively, we ensure every ceremony is as respectful of the natural world as it is of the life being honoured.

In Singapore, NEA regulations require cremated remains to be placed within a biodegradable urn, which is then released into the designated sea burial zone approximately 1.5 nautical miles south of Pulau Semakau.

TLC uses biodegradable urns exclusively for all sea burial services, in full compliance with NEA and MPA guidelines.

A Peaceful Journey at Sea - The Life Celebrant Singapore

Begin a Peaceful Journey

There is something profoundly moving about being out on the open water — away from the city, surrounded by the sea, with nothing but the horizon ahead.

The gentle rhythm of the waves, the quietness of the open sea, the closeness of the people you love — for many families, the sea burial itself becomes one of the most peaceful and healing moments of the entire farewell journey.

We are honoured to be part of it.

Our family is deeply grateful to The Life Celebrant team for their professionalism, compassion, and attention to detail. From the first moment, they guided us gently through every step and filled in the blanks when we had no idea what to do. They anticipated needs we didn’t think of, and created a farewell that was not only dignified, but also deeply meaningful and healing.

Special mention to Ms Michelle Koh, Ms Jamie, JK and the team — your kindness and respect made a very difficult time much lighter to bear. Thank you, TLC.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sea Burial Services in Singapore

  • Sea burial offers a deeply personal and environmentally conscious farewell — one that is intimate, private, and set apart from the formality of traditional services. Being out on the water, away from the city, creates a space that is uniquely peaceful. It is also an increasingly popular choice for those who lived with a love of the sea or a commitment to the natural world.

For families who prefer an onshore eco-friendly alternative, our inland ash scattering service at the Garden of Peace and Garden of Serenity is also available.

  • Sea burials in Singapore are regulated by the National Environment Agency (NEA) and the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) to protect the marine environment. Unlike in some other countries, ashes cannot be scattered freely at sea in Singapore — cremated remains must be placed within a biodegradable urn, which is then released at the NEA-designated sea burial zone, approximately 1.5 nautical miles south of Pulau Semakau, to the southwest of mainland Singapore.

No items containing plastics or synthetic materials may be released into the sea. Sea burials must be conducted between 7am and 7pm daily. Boat transportation to the designated zone is arranged by TLC as part of our sea burial service.

  • The designated sea burial zone in Singapore is approximately 1.5 nautical miles south of Pulau Semakau, to the southwest of mainland Singapore. Families may depart from either Marina South Pier at 31 Marina Coastal Drive or Changi Point Ferry Terminal at 51 Lorong Bekukong.

TLC arranges all vessel transportation as part of the service and will advise on the most suitable departure point based on your family's location and preferences.

  • Families may wish to bring fresh flowers to place on the water alongside the urn, prepare a short speech or reading to share on the boat, or select meaningful music to play during the ceremony.

These personal touches can make the farewell feel more intimate and reflective of your loved one's spirit. Our team will guide you through what to bring and what to expect on the day.

  • The duration varies depending on your family's wishes and whether any religious or personal rites are incorporated. Some families prefer a brief, quiet ceremony, whilst others choose a longer service that includes prayers, readings, and music.

We will work with you in advance to plan a ceremony that feels right — there is no fixed length, only what is meaningful for your family.
