Showers of Love 留心语 — Singapore's Decedent Spa Care & Family Farewell Ceremony

Most families in Singapore never get to say goodbye in the way they truly want to. The hours between passing and the wake are typically handled entirely by the funeral home — the family waiting, the body prepared out of sight, the transition managed without them. Showers of Love changes this entirely.
Showers of Love (留心语) is The Life Celebrant's signature decedent spa care service — a private, intimate ceremony that takes place before the wake, giving families a protected window of time to be with their loved one, participate in their final preparation, and say goodbye in a way that feels complete. It is offered to every family TLC serves, because we believe this moment should never be an afterthought.

What Is Decedent Spa Care?
Decedent spa care is a gentle, holistic approach to the preparation of the deceased — combining professional body care with a family-centred farewell experience. Rather than the body being prepared privately and presented to the family only at the wake, decedent spa care invites family members into the process — transforming what is typically a clinical procedure into a deeply personal, healing act.
At TLC, our Showers of Love service uses soft embalming techniques and aromatic products to prepare your loved one with tenderness and care in a serene, spa-like environment. The result is a natural, peaceful appearance that brings comfort to family members and creates the right conditions for the intimate ceremony that follows. Soft Embalming — A Gentler Approach
Conventional embalming uses formaldehyde-based chemicals that, whilst effective, can create a clinical environment and are harsh both on the body and the surrounding atmosphere. TLC uses soft embalming — a modern approach that relies on milder, non-toxic solutions — to maintain your loved one's natural appearance in a way that feels gentle and respectful.
Soft embalming:
Preserves the body in a peaceful, natural state
Allows for longer wakes and viewing periods where needed
Eliminates the overpowering odour associated with high concentrations of formaldehyde used in conventional embalming — creating a more comfortable, peaceful environment for the family ceremony that follows
Creates a serene, comforting environment appropriate for an intimate ceremony
Is a more environmentally conscious option than conventional embalming
The Showers of Love Ceremony — A Farewell Through the Five Love Languages
Showers of Love is built around the five love languages — a framework that acknowledges that people express and receive love in different ways. By weaving all five into the ceremony, we create a farewell that feels whole, allowing every family member to participate in whatever way feels most natural to them.
Acts of Service — Love in Action
Families are invited to take part in the gentle preparation of their loved one. This may include washing their hands, combing their hair, applying lotion, or helping to dress them in clothing of personal significance. These are guided by our trained team, and every step is safe, respectful, and profoundly meaningful. For many families, this is the moment when grief begins to shift — because they have done something real and loving for the person they have lost.
Words of Affirmation — Speaking from the Heart
Unspoken words can weigh heavily after a loss. Showers of Love creates a safe space to say what needs to be said. Families may read a letter aloud, share a memory, offer a prayer or blessing, or simply speak directly to their loved one. There is no script — only what feels true and necessary.
Quality Time — A Final Window Together
In the rush of funeral arrangements, families rarely have unhurried time with their loved one before the wake begins. Showers of Love provides exactly this — a quiet, protected space to sit together, hold hands, reflect on shared experiences, and simply be present. This final window of quality time allows families to anchor their grief in love rather than logistics.
Physical Touch — Love Beyond Words
Touch is one of the most instinctive expressions of love and comfort. Families may choose to hold their loved one's hand, gently stroke their hair, or rest a palm on their shoulder. These gestures — simple as they are — bring a profound sense of closeness and provide a final connection that many families describe as one of the most healing moments of the entire farewell.
Gifts — The Paper Crane Ritual One of the most visually and spiritually beautiful elements of Showers of Love is the folding of origami paper cranes — the orizuru (折鶴). In Japanese tradition, the crane is believed to carry souls to paradise and guide them towards the Light. In Showers of Love, folding a crane becomes a meditative act — each crease a silent prayer, each fold a message of love. Families fold their cranes together, filling the space with shared intention and remembrance. The cranes are then placed with the loved one or kept as keepsakes — tangible reminders of a bond that continues beyond death. Who Can Participate?
Every family member is welcome — adults and children alike. There is no single right way to take part, and no pressure to participate beyond what feels comfortable. Some family members may wish to be fully involved from beginning to end. Others may prefer to sit quietly, fold cranes, or simply be present in the room. Our team will guide everyone gently, and the pace is always set by the family.
For families with young children, our team will advise on the most appropriate level of involvement based on the age and emotional readiness of each child. In our experience, children who are included in a thoughtful, age-appropriate way often find the experience more comforting than being excluded entirely. If you decide to include your child, preparation beforehand makes a significant difference. Use honest, age-appropriate language rather than euphemisms — something like: "We're going to say goodbye to [name] by helping prepare them for their final journey. It's a way to show our love and care." Let them know what they will see and give them a simple role — folding paper cranes, helping choose an item of clothing, or placing flowers. Children often feel more at ease when they have something meaningful to contribute. Assign a trusted adult to stay close to them throughout, and create a safe space for them to share their feelings afterwards. Is Showers of Love Suitable for All Religions and Backgrounds?
Yes. Showers of Love is a universal decedent spa care service that transcends faith and cultural tradition. It is offered alongside Buddhist, Taoist, Christian, Catholic, Soka, and non-religious funeral services, and our team adapts every session to be fully respectful of your family's beliefs and customs. The paper crane ritual, for example, is offered as an optional element — families who prefer not to include it may choose alternative meaningful gestures instead.
The Four Steps of Showers of Love
1. Consultation
Our team will speak with you about your family's wishes, comfort levels, and any specific customs or preferences to be incorporated. There is no obligation and no fixed format — every session is built around your family.
2. Preparation
Our professional embalmers and beauticians prepare your loved one using soft embalming techniques and aromatic products, in a serene, private environment at TLC's facilities.
3. The Ceremony
Families are warmly received in a calming lounge with light refreshments, allowing everyone to settle and prepare before the ceremony begins. When the family is ready, they are gently ushered into the Showers of Love Sanctuary, where the ceremony unfolds in four stages:
Body cleansing — the SOL Angels guide the family in cleansing the body from head to feet, representing a full-circle journey of care. Family members may assist in this process if they wish
Facial and nail care — the body is given extra attention through facial treatments and nail care, ensuring your loved one looks serene and well-kept
Dressing — family members may assist in dressing their loved one in clothing of personal significance
Make-up and finishing — the final touches are applied with care and dignity, preparing your loved one for the wake The entire ceremony is led by TLC's SOL Angels — an all-ladies team trained specifically in the Showers of Love process, who guide the family with the utmost respect, sensitivity, and care throughout.
4. Reflection
Before your loved one is transferred to the wake venue, families have a final moment of reflection — a chance to say the last thing that needs to be said, in whatever form that takes.
